The town of Vrboska is located on the north coast of the island
of Hvar in a deep, narrow bay, surrounded by pine forests,
vineyards and olive groves.
The oldest buildings are from the Middle Ages and the church of St.
Peter is built before the 14th century. In the immediate vicinity
of the town are the ruins of a Roman estate "Villa Rustica" (8th
century BC to 7th century AD).
Matija Ivanić , the populist leader of the Hvar rebellion of
1510-1514, had a house in Vrboska. The Venetian troops attacked the
town in 1510 and in 1571 the Turks under Uluz Ali. Then in 1575 St.
Mary's Church was developed into a church fortress, the only one in
the archipelago.
The town developed into a fishing community and by the beginning of
the 20th century Vrboska had a sardine factory, a wooden boat
building industry, a hotel, a fishing association and regular boat
connections with Split and Brač.
It is worth visiting the fishing museum with the traditional fishing equipment, nets, tools and machines from the closed sardine factory. There is also a reconstructed fisherman's house, which gives insight into the life of the former inhabitants of Vrboska, the fishermen and field workers.
