Small island in the Danish South Sea with a renovated small marina

NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach is only recommended during the day via the unlit fairway "Mørkedyb". A small designated fairway leads from the red buoy of the fairway at approx. 020° into the harbor.

The fairway was reported as 2.5 m deep in September 2020.

June 2022: no entry possible at 1.85 m draught; sit up approx. 20 m before entering.

July 2022: entrance was dredged again to 2.50 m depth

Berths

Few places at 1.6 - 2m water depth. The jetty of the mail boat must remain free.

Surroundings

No utilities, not even drinking water at the harbor.

In the meeting house (approx. 600m away) on the island you can get water, fresh bread, cake and ice cream for DKK or euros. There is also a shower there.

NV Land Guide

If there is a fox and a hare on the island, then they probably say goodnight to each other here often. For one thing, the island is so small that the two can hardly avoid each other, and for another, sleepy Birkholm is probably the ideal place for such an event; there's nothing going on here! But that is precisely the attraction of the island in the Danish South Sea. The fact that around 1,000 pleasure boats dock in the small harbor every year proves that pleasure boaters see the island as an oasis of calm and not a desolate wasteland.

Around 10 people are said to have their permanent residence on the island. For them, agriculture and fishing are the sources of income.

The island kiosk at the meeting house only offers limited supplies in the form of baked goods and ice cream. Sometimes vegetables are also on offer. You can buy eel or Baltic crabs from the fishermen. Means of transportation on the island, which has a fine sandy beach, are wheelbarrows and handcarts or bicycles. Locals use tractors or quad bikes.

Today, the flat Birkholm is protected from flooding by dykes. This protection was lacking when the island was almost completely destroyed in the great floods around 1870.

Excursions to Ærø are no problem. A mail boat sails to Marstal on weekdays, booking is required.

Sehr entspanntes Inselchen.
